Curcio: ‘More than 94% of our municipalities are subject to landslides. We only talk about safety after tragedies’

Awareness is the key word, said the head of the Civil Protection Department: “We have to secure the infrastructure, behaviour can help us but it is clearly not enough”.
“We must realise that the territory is fragile,” said Fabrizio Curcio, “we have more than 94% of our municipalities subject to landslides. They have coastal erosion and flood risk, with a very high population exposure. And we are only talking about hydrogeological risk. We have more than 620,000 landslides surveyed, that is, known. We have an extensively seismic territory, in some areas and regions all the municipalities are classified as having significant seismic importance. We must realise that the beauty of our territory is offset by fragility. – continued Curcio – with the management and resources on instability, prevention activities in general, and then as citizens find a way to be more present and push them more also in the awareness of politics, politics picks up the citizen’s need’.
And then with some regret the Head of Civil Protection interviewed by Fazio said: ‘I can only talk about prevention during emergencies, it is dramatic at all levels, today we are here to talk about it because unfortunately there is a tragedy’.
“We need to broaden the topic of discussion even when we are not in a dramatic event.
And on the subject of the earthquake: ‘We need to secure the infrastructure, behaviour can help us, but it is clearly not enough’.
