Algeria plans first nuclear plant by 2025, says minister

Algeria has reiterated plans to build the country's first nuclear power plant by 2025, according to reported comments made by the country’s energy and mines minister.

The state's Algeria Press Service (APS) quoted Yousef Yousfi as telling a press conference in the country yesterday that nuclear power was needed to "cope with soaring demand" for electricity.

Regulators approve restart of two Belgian units

Regulators in Belgium have approved the restart of two nuclear reactors that were closed in 2012 over safety concerns.

Belgium's Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) said it considers that the Doel-3 and Tihange-2 pressurised water reactors can be restarted safely.

Moniz confirmed as new US energy secretary

The US Senate yesterday confirmed the appointment of Ernest Moniz as the country's new energy secretary.

Mr Moniz, whose nomination by President Barack Obama was announced last March, succeeds Steven Chu.

Mr Chu announced that he was stepping down last February, after serving four years in the post.

PM welcomes Russia loan offer for first Vietnam nuclear plant

Russia has said it is ready to offer financial assistance as part of its involvement in building the first nuclear power plant in Vietnam.

Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear corporation, said financing for nuclear construction was discussed during a "working meeting" in Russia yesterday between Vietnam's prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Rosatom director-general Sergey Kirienko.

Following related talks on 14 May, with Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev, Mr Dung said the two leaders had agreed to draw up a "timetable" for building the proposed Ninh Thuan-1 nuclear power plant in the southeastern province of Ninh Thuan.
